Obituary for Betty Skinner
Betty Kay “Lady Bug” (Blanton) Skinner, 78, passed away Friday, April 21, 2017. She was born on January11, 1939. Although she was born in California she was a resident of Pace for 50 years.
Betty married Lewis Blanton in 1954 and they were married for 17 years. Betty and Lewis had seven children together. In 1971 they won “Family of the Year” at the Pensacola Fair. After her marriage to Lewis ended, Betty had a brick home built and moved her family into their new home. She was a loving mother who did her best to provide for her children. In 1976 she married Buddy Skinner, who had three children, so together they now had ten children. Betty and Buddy loved to fish and camp at the river. Betty was a wonderful cook and when she made her pot of gumbo everyone wanted to come to dinner. Betty also was a crafter and loved to sew. She would make baby quilts, baby bonnets and pouty babies. Betty made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. She would teach her granddaughters how to sew during their summer breaks. Betty enjoyed collecting hand blown glass and scrapbooking. She was a Bunco Queen and loved playing card games. Betty was a member of the Ponca Tribe and was proud of her Indian heritage which included Chief Standing Bear.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Smith and Edith Storer; sons, Ronnie (Debbie) Blanton, Steve Blanton and Richard Blanton; and grandchildren, Jennifer Robinson, Guy Robinson and Kimberly Gooden.
Lady Bug is survived by her husband, Buddy, of Pace; her sons, Lewis Blanton, Roger “Peanut” Blanton, James (Wendy) Skinner, Beverly (Rufus) Phillips, Dede (Tommy) Barrett, Diane Skinner, Marie Bennett; and daughter in law, Marie Blanton, all of Pace; and a sister, Sheryl Dickerson, of San Clemente, California. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Carrie Lindsey, Ryan Blanton, Jessica White, Rachel Wisdom, Tanya Blanton, Marissa Bohner, Josh Blanton, Tiffany Heist, Chris Blanton, Mandy Drew, Patrick Barrett, Jason Robinson, Chrystal Hughes, Gary Bennett, Jerry Hencey, Tuesday Skinner; great-grandchildren, Avery Lindsey, Lily White, Tucker Wisdom, Sophia Marker, Lacey Heist, Kory Heist, Emily Heist, Harper Drew, Erika Robinson, Natalye Robinson, DaniLynn Odom, Angel Olds, Jasmond Olds, Trinity Hencey, and two more boys expected later this year; nephew, Bobby Smith, and numerous other nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Lewis Funeral Home, Pace Chapel, with Rev. Mike Poston officiating. Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow services in Elizabeth Chapel Community Cemetery, Chumuckla, with Jerold Thummel, Bobby Smith, Jimmy Stokes, PeeWee Cole, Billy Brown and Mike Smith, serving as pallbearers; and Lewis Funeral Home directing.
The family will receive friends 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, April 24, 2017 at Lewis Funeral Home, Pace Chapel.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Nashed and his staff as well as the many nurses and technicians at the various locations that provided care for Betty. Some of you have touched our lives in ways you may never know.
